چکیده

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a well known clinical entity characterized by anterograde memory disturbance of sudden onset that lasts 1 to 24 hours. Orientation in space and time is impaired while consciousness remains undisturbed . TGA may refer to a single expression of several physiopathological phenomena. Conceptually, cerebral ischemia, epileptic discharge, and migraine constitute the main pathogenic hypothesis. Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) has become a powerful tool in the evaluation of patients with suspected stroke owing to its high sensitivity and specificity, even for small areas of acute ischemia. Consequently, this method has also been applied to TGA to gain further insights into the ischemic hypothesis of this condition. We report a patient with a typical TGA presentation and MRI findings suggestive of an ischemic insult. We further discuss the ischemic hypothesis of TGA.

Bilateral hippocampal abnormalities on diffusion-weighted MRI in transient global amnesia: report of a case.

The pathophysiology of transient global amnesia (TGA) is still speculative. Recently, diffusion-weighted image (DWI) of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) documented tiny lesions in the hippocampus of patients with TGA in the acute stage. Most studies reported unilateral lesions on MRI. We present one patient of TGA with high signal-intensity lesions in bilateral hippocampus on DWI at the acute s...

Transient global amnesia with a hippocampal lesion followed by transient epileptic amnesia

Transient epileptic amnesia (TEA) is a seizure disorder characterized by brief, recurrent attacks of amnesia in middleaged or elderly subjects, often occurring on waking, with favorable response to anticonvulsant medication [1]. While this syndrome is becoming increasingly recognized, its association with transient global amnesia (TGA) is not fully understood. It remains unknown whether TEA is ...

Transient global amnesia.

Received on: Mar 27, 2012 – Accepted on: Apr 23, 2012 A 65-year-old male patient with no past medical history, complains of sudden loss of memory that lasted about four hours. He was submitted to a magnetic resonance image (MRI) of the cranium, which showed no alterations. Follow-up MRI 48 hours later showed a diffusion restriction focus in the left hippocampus, consistent with the clinical hyp...

Transient global amnesia: hippocampal magnetic resonance imaging abnormalities.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is an episodic dysfunction of declarative memory that usually resolves within 12 hours and whose underlying pathophysiological mechanisms are still unclear. Recent studies, on the basis of transient focal high-signal abnormalities in the hippocampus on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), suggest involvement of memory circuits in the temporo-mesial region. Out of a t...

Transient Hyperintensity On Diffusion-Weighted MRI in Transient Global Amnesia

Objects: Different theories were suggested on the etiopathogenesis of transient global amnesia. Methods: We demonstrate a patient with transient global amnesia, in whom, a transient hyperintense signal change on left hippocampus was detected in diffusionand T2weighted magnetic resonance images. Conclusion: The absence of vascular risk factors or atherosclerotic changes in neuroimaging, in addit...
